Morning Nerd Time

A non-pregnancy post.

Once upon a time I drove to work in silence.

Then I started having a 30 minute commute and pulled out my musicals soundtracks.

And then, somehow, my husband convinced me to check out npr.

To be honest, I had never even heard of npr before I got to Princeton.  I'm sure people back home listen to it.  Right?  Probably.  I just didn't.

When I did hear of it, I figured it was some snooty station that I wanted no part of.  To be fair, during that animal show on Saturday afternoons, I still agree.

But... oh my goodness, how could I do my commute without Morning Edition?  I love the insights of Cokie Roberts on Mondays, and the shockingly fast roller coaster of emotions brought on by Fridays' Storycorps. Is there a better voice than Garrison Keillor during writer's almanac? Where else could I learn about how people eat more calories after their favorite team loses or how Governor Wallace's daughter viewed the "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" speech?  One day I might even try the cooking suggestions during that kitchen segment using weird, leftover cabinet items.

Disclosure - sometimes I turn it down when I've had enough talk about Syria or other important world news.  Don't judge.  6:05am can be early for some of that heavy reporting.

I also turn it down when I can recognize what PDG is trying to sing/say.  Like when he waves his arm back and forth saying "shhh, shhh, shh" and it means he's singing "Wheels on the Bus," the wipers verse.  (It's what we sing whenever he falls down or gets hurt.  Or, now, when he does that because he's bored of npr.)

But yeah, I guess J-Man got me hooked.  So until my boy(s) can convince me to blast kidz bop, I'm an early morning nerd.
